What Does It Mean to be Part of the WLRU?
Member Statements

“WLRU has meant and continues to mean a lot to me over the twenty years of being a member. It means having caring and supportive friends. It means having a sense of joy when meeting outstanding, deserving students and greeting their support groups at the annual student award ceremony. It means participating in interesting events . . . It means constructively working with dedicated members to achieve WLRU’s goals, such as raising funds for scholarships. I am grateful for the opportunities I have as a member of such a fine group.”

“I joined WLRU about four years ago and found the other members to be welcoming, dedicated, talented, and eager to brainstorm new ideas for ways to raise scholarship funds for the deserving students who are recommended by their deans for the WLRU scholarships. At the scholarship awards ceremony, we hear from these students and it is an extremely rewarding day.”

“ . . .over the past 25 years or so I have had regular yearly contact with the members of the WLRU and with the student scholarship recipients . . . I retired from Rutgers in July 2017, and shortly after that decided to join the WLRU as a member . . . I began to work with Rena Falk and Evelyn Sedehi on a project to make contact with past recipients. [Reaching out to past recipients] has been deeply meaningful. We are continuing the outreach and we look forward to upcoming programs and to the Fall 2022 gathering.”

“The women involved were great and the programs were very interesting . . . But the aspect that turned out to be most significant was the connection with impressive Rutgers undergraduate students through our Scholarship Awards . . . Since one requirement for this award is involvement in Community Service, these tend to be very special students . . . With a world full of insurmountable problems, listening to these young people describe their studies at Rutgers, their efforts to give back to their communities, and their goals engenders a sense of hope going forward. With young people like these, the future does look brighter.”
